Merriam Webster defines a pattern as something that happens in a regular and repeated way. Our pattern is determined by how we think and see ourselves in this life. Our pattern is so ingrained that we usually operate our days on auto-pilot. We are not really considering how we do things on a daily basis.
So my questions for consideration are these... what pattern do we live and identify with? Is it a pattern of self-absorption? Which would be focusing on this temporary life only, making sure we get what is ours. Or is it a pattern of helping others, and being consumed in Father's business? Rather than promoting ourselves, we are focused on promoting Him.
Self-absorption will bring concern for ourselves only. We won't consider other's needs and desires. It is hard for Holy Spirit to use us because we are so focused on ourselves. That self-focus harbors drama with others, drama in our personal life, fear, dread, and being influenced by society. There isn't much of a notable difference between us and the chaotic rhythm of people who do not know God and live day to day in the "grind".
Being about Father's business is to be led by Him. It is also about seeing others as being wonderfully made by God. It is considering how to help and promote the Gospel. To learn how to help as many people as we can. To operate in love for our brother. To help Him recover the lost. It is becoming that "light in the darkness".
Look intently at this passage in the Message. “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” - Matthew 11:28 - 30
If we aren't getting a "real rest", as Jesus speaks of in this verse, maybe it's time we change our pattern. Maybe it is time we love our brother, give up our self-interest, and consider a pattern that promotes God's Kingdom. Maybe it is time we decide to change our pattern. Maybe it's time we learn to let Him build our pattern. Maybe it is time.
